Elna Gray Winward age 92, of Vernal, died peacefully at her home she shared with her sister, on Friday October 17, 2014. She was born March 31, 1922 to Samuel James and Jennie May Jones Gray. Elna attended school in Vernal for over 11 years and later graduated from Granite Alternative High school. She married Don F. Winward, January 27, 1941 their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple September 18, 1963. Elna was an excellent seamstress, she alternated clothing for many companies in the Salt Lake City area, with some of the largest companies in the state; she made hundreds of quilts and stuffed animals for her family and friends. She enjoyed creating birthday and wedding cakes for many, and loved doing oil paintings and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She was active in her faith her whole life serving in many callings. She was a charter member of the Taylorsville Daughters of the Utah Pioneers of Utah Pioneer camp and Vernal County camp "Thornburg" where she served faithfully with in. Elna served with the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary She is survived by her sons Robert D. (Diana) of Sandy; Clyde G. (Judy Carpenter) of Florida; daughter in law Peggie Winward of Riverton. Brothers and sisters Lowell Gray Wellinton; JennieVeve "Peggy" McArthur of Roosevelt; Nelda Cook of Vernal where Elna resided the last six years, and many grand, great grand and great-great grandchildren She is preceded in death by her husband, sons Gaylon and Jeffery, two grandchildren, brothers Marcell and Melvin Gray. Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday Oct. 21, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. at the Vernal Memorial park. Friends and family may call at the Blackburn Vernal Mortuary, Tuesday from 11:45-12:30 prior to going to the cemetery.
