Gladys Lucille Steele, 94, a loving and dedicated wife, Mother, Sister, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great-Great Grandmother, Aunt, Friend and also a long time resident of Vernal passed away January 1, 2021 at the home of her daughter, Debra Kay Moser in West Jordan, Utah, surrounded by her loving family. She died of complications from a stroke.
She was born Gladys Lucille Lawton on September 12, 1926 in Grand Junction, Colorado to Gilford Avery and Ellen Jacobson Lawton.
After graduating from College she moved to Rangely, Colorado to be a School teacher, were she met and married Austin Steele on June 8, 1947
In 1957 they moved to Bonanza, Utah, while there she taught kindergarten for a few years and a substitute teacher for the elementary school for 1st through 6th grades. She was an assistant Girl Scout leader for several years. She loved sewing and made all of her daughter`s dresses.
In 1971 they moved to Vernal, Utah where she worked in a sewing factory for a few years then at the Lamplighter Motel as a desk clerk and accountant. She remained in Vernal until November 2017 when she moved to West Jordan, Utah.
She was an active member of the Vernal Christian Church, and was the treasurer for several years. She also was an active member of The American Legion, where she held the position as treasurer, secretary and president.
Gladys was well known for making those around her happy. Her smile was contagious. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and liked to bowl, sew, and quilt. She made two of her daughters and one granddaughter`s wedding dresses. She made quilts for all of her children and Grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing board and card games with family. She was called a card shark by her family. She started traveling with family in 2010. She went on cruises to Alaska, Canada and the Bahamas. She also went to Hawaii, New York City, Boston, Nashville, Graceland, Florida, Maryland, Arizona, Wyoming, South Dakota and Branson, MO.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Austin Jay Steele; sister, Virginia May Lepinotes; father, Gilford A. Lawton; her mother, Ellen Jacobson Lawton and daughter-in-law, Consuelo “Connie” Steele; Great Grandson, A.J. Duncan.
She is survived by her children: Sharyl Ellen (Michael) Sheftz of Pace, Florida; Lynn Robert Steele of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Debra Kay (Allen) Moser of West Jordan, Utah and Penny Lee Edwards of Vernal; 19 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and two brothers: Kenneth Gilford (Bettie J) Lawton and Donald Lee (Rose) Lawton and several nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful for Hospice and the great care and love they gave to her over the years.
The family will receive friends an hour before the funeral at the church. Interment will take place at the Vernal Memorial Park under the direction of the Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vernal Christian Church. (1845 West 750 South). A viewing will be from 9:30 to 10:30 at Blackburn Vernal Mortuary prior to traveling to the Church. Pastor Marty Young will be officiating. Burial will be in the Vernal Memorial Park.
