Helen Myrl passed away November 11, 2020 at St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City Utah from COVID-19. Helen was born on April 5, 1933 in Neola, Utah to James Wesley and Fern Marie Allred. Raised in the Uintah Basin area, she graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1951.
Helen married Boyd Claud Winn on March 17, 1951 and had four children; Shirley, Glenda, Twain and Barbara. Helen and Boyd divorced in 1966. Helen then married Norman Van Massey December 18, 1970. He had five children. They were later sealed in the Provo Utah LDS Temple, March 26, 1983. Helen worked for the Uintah School District for many years. She worked as a secretary aid, media aid, and media director for Naples Elementary before working as a title one tutor at Ashley Elementary. She often spoke of the privilege she had to help many of her great grandchildren with their spelling words, through her love of crossword puzzles.
Helen had many talents, all of which she was willing to share, of course those talents came with the often repeated phrase: "Let me tell ya a secret"... which would be followed by a fool proof way to make bread, cure an ailment, clean a stain, fold the laundry, how to successfully grow a garden, quilting and crocheting. Many of us remember the great care she would take to prepare a meal, and host an event. From cinnamon rolls, pumpkin cookies to the simple peanut butter sandwiches with no crust, Grandma Massey, Aunt Helen, Mom, or the cooking spouse to the fence crew, she was known for her cooking.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Maeser LDS Chapel (2745 West 1000 North) with a visitation 1 hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Vernal Memorial Park under the care and direction of the Blackburn and Sons Mortuary and Cremation Care.
