John A. Shumway died peacefully at home with family near on December 19, 2024 after a long battle with cancer.

He was born January 4, 1948 in Lovell Wyoming to Charles Nephi and Helen Asay Shumway, the second of five sons.

He moved to Vernal at the age of 6 with his parents and older brother. He attended school in Vernal and graduated from Uintah High School where he participated in football, basketball and track and field. He also played basketball for the College of Eastern Utah.

He married his high school sweetheart Connie Gardiner in the Salt Lake Temple on June 7, 1968, they were married for fifty-six years, and that marriage was blessed with seven children.

John went on to earn a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Utah and practiced in that profession for 40 years. He loved serving the public as a pharmacist and whenever he saw someone who needed his help. He served with compassion and his quirky sense of humor made him a favorite of everyone.

John is survived by his wife Connie, daughters Launa (Chris Millecam), Jonelle, Kristi (Bodie Taylor), Veronica (TJ Morton) and Madison, fifteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and his brothers Charles, Spence, Jed and Brad. He is preceded in death by both sons, Robert John (Fredia) and Jason Duaine, along with his parents. 

Viewing Sunday, December 22, 2024 at the Blackburn Vernal Mortuary from  5-7 pm. Burial will be Monday 11 am at the Vernal Memorial Park
