Karen Volckerick

Karen Fae Fredricks was born August 7, 1949 in Pocatello, Idaho. She was the first born child of La Von & Catherine Pence Fredricks. While living in Pocatello, her three sisters, Debra, Valori, and Pamela were born. In 1957 the family moved to Mackay, Idaho, where Von and Glenn Pence (grandfather) purchased the Mackay Lumber Company. Shortly after, her only brother, Mark, was born. While growing up in Mackay, Karen loved to visit the home of her grandparents (her mothers parents), whom she was very close with. During these visits she would look out the big bay window of their house into the garden looking at the big purple lilac bushes which is where her love of lilacs and the color purple was formed. She loved spending time with her horse Goldie and her dog Tippie. During her senior year, her father died at the young age of 40. After graduating from Mackey High School, the family moved to California, where her mother made a living as a Registered Nurse. While in California, Karen worked as a bookkeeper. She became a member of the LDS church on May 10, 1975. The Lord guided her to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she met the love of her life, Paul Volckerick. In West Valley, Utah, they began raising their children, Michelle, Glenn, and Jennifer. Eventually the Lord led them to Vernal. She was blessed with five grandchildren; Sabrina, Micheal, Richard, Nicholas and Catherine, and three great-grandchildren, Kynnidi, Cheyanne, and Bronson. She was very active in Vernal Third Ward. Her greatest passion was genealogy, she volunteered at the Genealogy Library for many years. She was an excellent seamstress; sewing anything from doll clothes, quilts, wedding dresses, and everything imaginable. If she wasnt sewing she was knitting, crocheting or reading a good book. Karen was loved and adored by her family, and gave selflessly of her time and talents to those people who were lucky enough to have known her. Her passing was much too soon, and we will miss her beyond what words can express. We know she is with her Lord and Savior and her dear grandparents, parents and her daughter, Michelle. The legacy that she leaves us is that of kindness, patience, endurance, selflessness and gentleness. We also know that she will be there to greet us, and that helps heal our breaking hearts. Karen was preceded in death by her daughter Michelle, grandson Richard, parents, Von and Catherine Fredricks and grandparents Eula and Glenn Pence. Karen is survived by her husband Paul Volckerick daughter Jennifer and son Glenn all of Vernal. Three sisters Debra, Pamela, and Valori all of California; brother Mark of Idaho. Her grandchildren Sabrina (Cody) Zufelt of Vernal, Micheal (Georgia) Keller of Kentucky, Catherine of Indiana, and Nicholas of Indiana, and three great grandchildren Kynnidi, Cheyanne, and Bronson Zufelt all of Vernal. Funeral services were held Friday, June 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vernal 3rd Ward LDS Chapel. Burial was in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery under the care and direction of the Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
