Newell H Warren, or as the grandkids lovingly called him, “Grandpa Noodle” was born one of seven kids to Alice and Harold Warren in Bluebell, Utah on December 7, 1928.
He spent the days of his childhood helping his mom and dad take care of their family sheep and getting into trouble for chasing the girls out of the swimming hole on his horse! In the story written of his childhood it says, “Newell was full of mischief”. You could see that mischief in the twinkle in his eye to the very end.
The outdoors were a big part of Newell’s life. He grew up outside, exploring every inch of the mountains around him, hunting, camping, finding arrowheads and fishing with his brothers Auer and Gary. He loved his family and was close to his six siblings all throughout his entire life and will now be happily reunited with those that have passed before him.
When Newell was 18, he met his one true love, Marilyn, at a church dance. He said it was love at first sight. She said she remembers him saying, “I like the little short one”. One year later they were married in the Salt Lake City courthouse on March 8, 1947. When he proposed he said, “I promise I will always be true to you.” And he was. They were married for 73 years before she passed away in August of 2020.
Newell and Marilyn had 3 beautiful children. Randy, Sharon, and Evelyn. Newell dedicated his life to his family and worked hard every day at Chevron for 35 years when he retired at the young age of 53.
He was known for being a hard worker and during those 35 years never missed a day of work except to attend his daughter’s wedding. He loved his children and instilled in them his love of nature and his appreciation of the beautiful world around them. His passion for the outdoors, the stillness of the mountains, and the beauty of the rugged country lives on in his children and grandchildren.
Newell also loved animals. All the grandkids remember their weenie dogs growing up. Heidi and Anya were always wrapped in little blankets and when they snapped at us kids for trying to pet them, it was definitely our fault. Grandpa always pretended that he was just tolerating the pets for his beloved wife, but everyone that knew him knew he loved his beagle, Bogey with all his heart. When Marilyn passed, he kept her precious cat, Precious, as a companion. Precious sat at his feet as he joined Marilyn on the other side.
As a young man, Newell loved spending time with his brothers, chasing wild horses, lions, and bears. He hunted a lot and was known for walking just about every inch of land under the sky. He was even featured in the Field And Stream Magazine with his brother Auer as the “Walking Warrens”. In all that walking he found many treasures. He collected the neatest arrowheads and Indian artifacts over the years and was proud to show them to anyone that set foot in their home.
As a teenager Newell worked on a farm in Salem, Utah, where he learned to grow vegetables. He used that knowledge to grow beautiful gardens that thrived at his home in Vernal. I think every grandchild remembers digging potatoes at Grandpa Noodle’s house. He loved gardening and passed that love on to many of his children and grandchildren.
You couldn’t visit Grandpa Noodle’s house without leaving with a little cash in your pocket and a reminder not to take any wooden nickels. He was a generous man and loved to give. He was a storyteller and always told the best stories, with a few cuss words thrown in for good measure. He always had everyone in the room laughing with his crazy stories! He was a character and will be missed by many. In his words, “he is off like a herd of turtles”.
Newell and Marilyn built a beautiful life together and left a legacy of 14 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great- grandchildren. Although our hearts ache with his passing, we rejoice in his reunion with his beloved wife. He is joining many loved ones that passed before him. He is survived by his brother and sister, Gary Warren and Karen Stewart. He is also survived by his three children, Randy Warren, Sharon Stephens, and Evelyn Brady.
We will gather as family and friends to honor him and his incredible life.
