Roland Jay Slaugh
5/4/1937- 8/22/22
Jay passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 4, 1937 in Vernal to Bertha and Hyrum Slaugh.
He grew up in the Davis Ward in Vernal. He attended Uintah High School, where he later graduated. After graduation, he went to work in the Gilsonite Mines. Jay was a jack of all trades. He owned a body and fender shop, worked for Western Living, drove trucks, raised pigs for market, worked for a gold mining outfit, and designed and built sheds for J Barn Sheds. Jay had 2 brothers; Wade and Nolan, and 3 sisters; Floy, Nita, and Gwen.
Jay never met a stranger. He would talk to anybody and everybody. He loved animals, especially horses, and was known around town for his beautiful Tennessee Walkers. He also loved music, and could play a number of instruments, most often his old acoustic guitar. He often wrote his own songs and poetry to share with his family. He loved the outdoors. He often went camping and loved to explore the mountains.
He met Arlene Clark at a dance in the old Imperial Hall in Vernal. They were married on June 21, 1956, and together they have 7 children, (Glade, Karen, Jaylene, Clark, Ronda, Tresa, and Jessica). Jay and Arlene had been married for 66 years at the time of his passing. He built a log home down in the Horseshoe Bend alongside the Green River for his family.
He met Ruth Johnson, and she joined the family in 1983, along with her 2 children, (Michael and Anna) She and Jay had 6 more children together, (Jeremy, Joe, Wayne, Cindy, Brian, and Rebecka).
He later met Jane Schlief in 1996, and she joined the ever-growing family.
Jay suffered a major stroke in 2015, which had a significant impact on his way of life and his livelihood, but he maintained his great sense of humor.
He has 43 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Jay is preceded in death by his father, Hyrum Slaugh; mother, Bertha Reid Slaugh; brother, Nolan Slaugh, sisters and brothers- in-law, Floy and Grant Johnson, Nita and Kelly Powell; daughter-in-law, Cecy Slaugh; son-in-law Raymond Oaks; and great-granddaughter, Gracie Stewart.
He leaves behind his wives, Arlene Slaugh, Ruth Johnson, and Jane Schlief; children: Glade (Cecy-deceased) Slaugh (San Luis, CO), Karen (Dave) Adamson (Reliance, WY), Jaylene (Raymond-deceased) Oaks (Vernal), Clark (Jarie) Slaugh (Vernal), Ronda (Scott) Strothers (Rock Springs, WY), Tresa (Craig) Flanagan (Woods Cross, UT), Jessica (Randy) Collins (Vernal), Michael (Sarah) Morrison (Vernal), Anna (Seth) Ball (Woods Cross, UT), Jeremy (Valarie) Slaugh (Vernal), Joe (Catrina) Slaugh (Vernal), Wayne (Alyson) Slaugh (Vernal), Cindy (Chris) Helco (Vernal), Brian (Kelcie) Slaugh (Vernal), Rebecka (Ellis) Redmond (Vernal), Alex (Brianna) Johnson (Vernal), brother, Wade (Sylvia) Slaugh; sister, Gwen Williams, 43 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at the Jensen Cemetery on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow.
Services are under the direction of Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
