“R.C.” Rulon Corless “Jude” Hacking finished his last round up December 31, 2020. Jude was born in Vernal Utah to Rulon Stringham and Vera Corless Hacking on August 1, 1930 during the Great Depression. He was born into a ranching family that ran some of the biggest herds of sheep Uintah County.
Jude was on a horse on Diamond Mountain herding sheep with his parents as soon as he was born. When Jude was old enough, he and his sister Carol Jean had to bottle feed the bum lambs whose mothers had died or abandoned them. Sometimes the bum lamb herd exceeded 20 which proved to be quite a job as they had to be fed morning and night. He never shirked this duty. As he grew more duties were added since he was the only boy. These duties included milking the cows, irrigating alfalfa fields, putting up hay, and all other farm and ranch duties.
Jude often spoke of his family going to Main Street in Vernal the night World War II ended. Main Street was full of people laughing dancing singing. Jude had never forgotten that happy day of celebration.
Maeser Elementary, Ashley Valley Junior High, Uintah High School and the School of Hard Knocks was the education path Jude followed. He earned a Masters Degree in herding sheep from Maeser to the desert by Red Wash to Diamond Mountain to Lonetree Wyoming and then back down again to the valley of Vernal to winter the sheep on the permits between the Coal Mine Basin, U Hill and Lapoint.
Jude was in the sheep business until he married a cattlemen‘s daughter, Meriel Murray. Cattle joined sheep on the Hacking Ranch as well as five children. Mitch(Lisa), Susan(Brad Horrocks), Rod(deceased), Shara(Craig Buttars), and Sonya (Rod Hauer) all worked on the ranch with Jude and Meriel.
To support his family Jude went to work in the oil field for McCullough Tool. He started as a shop hand then graduated to a truck driver then salesman onto a manager. Meriel and him also owned and operated the original A&W drive-in on the corner of 900 West Main in Vernal.
Jude left McCullough and started Target Trucking. He graduated from Target Trucking and began going Sundays to the Uintah Care Center. He loved wheeling people to the church services, passing sacrament, working with all the wonderful people there and wheeling people back to their rooms after services.
Always a hard worker to the bitter end, Jude was very blessed to have his son Mitch pick him up everyday to go do cows. Jude lived by himself until a heart attack sent him out of this life to his next roundup in the sky.
